Sen. Gloria Romero, D-Los Angeles, and the Santa Monica-based Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights no doubt are hoping that newspaper opinion pages support their “Corporate Three Strikes Act.”
And they probably have a good shot at it, at least in their hometown market.
SB 335 would enact a “three-strikes” law for corporations convicted of certain felonies, including those involving fraud, civil rights, antitrust and environmental protection.
A third strike within 10 years would bring a prohibition from doing business in the state. But the first two strikes would trigger a requirement that the company detail its transgressions in a full-page advertisement “in the largest newspaper of general circulation in California.”
That would be the Los Angeles Times, no way around it.
No word yet whether Sacramento-area lawmakers will push for adding “the largest newspaper of general circulation in the capital of California.”
