Richmond oil refinery fire expected to raise gas prices

<p>Consumer advocates say a major fire at an oil refinery in the San Francisco Bay area, one of the country's largest, will push gas prices above $4 for a gallon of regular on the West Coast.<br /> <br /> "This system is made to break. When it breaks, because there is so little inventory, like 10 days in California, it allows the companies to raise prices really quickly and make a big profit," said Jamie Court of ConsumerWatchdog.org.</p>

<p> There are demands emerging that the Evergreen Oil Refinery change its practices or shut down.<br /> <br /> "They seem to be a pattern of problems," said Liza Tucker from Consumer Watchdog.<br /> <br /> Consumer Watchdog says the California Department Of Toxic Substances Control is failing to police Evergreen oil after repeated violations near homes and schools.<br /> <br /> "It's just simply unacceptable to let a company off the hook that way for years at a time," said Tucker.</p>

Hyundai Sued For Misleading Consumers With MPG Claims

<p> Consumer Watchdog has sued the automaker Hyundai over its '40 MPG' claims on the Elantra model. The lawsuit alleges that Hyundai utilized high-impact television, Internet, and print advertisements that touted "The 40 Mile Per Gallon Elantra" without government-required disclosures. The omitted disclosures would have informed consumers that the car does not attain 40 MPG under normal driving conditions. The illegal advertisements caused tens of thousands of California drivers to purchase or lease 2011 and 2012 Elantras and consequently incur unexpected fuel costs.</p>
