Consumer Alert: Insurance Industry-Backed Prop 33 Will Hurt Real Drivers

The insurance industry-backed Prop 33 will hurt real drivers, like Alexis. It unfairly surcharges almost anyone who had a legitimate lapse in their insurance coverage -- even if it's because they stopped driving. Should you pay more for your auto insurance simply because you stopped driving, took mass transit, or went to college and didn't need a car?

Prop 33 Seeks To Change Car Insurance Rules

Proposition 33 on the November ballot asks votes to change the way car insurance rates are calculated in California. The measure proposes tweaking current rules to allow companies to consider drivers' insurance history when setting how much they will pay.

It is not a new idea. In fact, Proposition 33 is similar to Proposition 17, a measure voters rejected just two years ago. Essentially, people who have had car insurance continuously for five years can get a discount. People who have an interruption in coverage would face much higher car insurance fees.

Campaign Staffers… or ‘Real’ Actors?

Proposition 33, a ballot measure funded almost exclusively by car insurance magnate George Joseph, seeks to add a new criteria to calculating insurance rates: coverage history.

Daniel Palay from Consumer Watchdog takes issue with the fact that several of the purported real drivers, and real college students appearing in the Prop 33 ads are actually employees of the campaign's consultant, Marketplace Communications. Furthermore, Palay objects to the employees appearing without any disclosure.
