Wildfire survivors from the Los Angeles area held a peaceful protest outside Gov. Gavin Newsom’s mansion Tuesday night as he hosted a reception for state lawmakers.
The group expressed concerns about the governor’s push for lawmakers to approve limits on who and how much private utilities must pay when they are responsible for catastrophic wildfires.
“We’re afraid the governor is going to bail out the utilities, the people on the ground need help,” Eaton Fire survivor Rasheed Ali said.
Some lawmakers, including state Sens. Henry Stern and Sasha Renee Perez, stopped to speak with the protesters.
Negotiations between lawmakers and the governor are ongoing, with less than a week remaining in the legislative session.
