Serenade Lawmakers with Bailout Carols
Citizen volunteers today serenaded State Assembly Energy Costs & Availability Committee members with ‘bailout carols’, to protest some committee members’ attempts to approve a ratepayer-funded bailout of Southern California Edison.
“For Edison, and the other two utilities, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in August,” stated David Goldsheft, citizen volunteer. “But California citizens should not pay a penny more to bail the utilities out for their deregulation mistakes. We’re singing ‘bailout carols’ to illustrate just how unwarranted such a public giveaway to the utilities is.”
FTCR has established the “War Room” in a hotel near the State Capitol to counter attempts to shove an eleventh-hour backroom deal to bail out Southern California Edison through the state legislature. The War Room coordinates a volunteer-based lobbying effort for the final three weeks of the legislative session. The volunteers will counter the massive lobbying juggernaut that has descended upon the Capitol to force ratepayers to pick up the tab for Edison‘s deregulation losses. They are highly visible walking the Capitol halls wearing yellow armbands bearing the ‘bailout watchdog’ logo.

BAILOUT CAROLS
Merry Bailout (To the tune of We Wish you a Merry Christmas)
We won’t pay another penny,
We won’t pay another penny,
We won’t pay another penny,
Don’t gouge us again.
They want to raise rates,
And gouge us again,
It’s Christmas in August
For ol’ Edison.
Don’t force us into a bailout,
Don’t force us into a bailout,
Don’t force us into a bailout,
Or we’ll vote you out.
They want to raise rates,
And gouge us again,
It’s Christmas in August
For ol’ Edison.
We wish you no bailout, Edison,
We wish you no bailout, Edison,
We wish you no bailout, Edison,
Your parent should pay.
They want to raise rates,
And gouge us again,
It’s Christmas in August
For ol’ Edison.
Bailout, Bailout (to the tune of Dreidel, Dreidel)
Bailout, bailout, bailout
They made it out of cash
But the energy companies
Get to keep their stash
Ohhh, Bailout, bailout, bailout
Deregulation was at fault
But politicians’ answer
With a ratepayer assault
Bailout, bailout, bailout
Puts Edison on the dole
Takes money from our pockets
And leaves us in the hole.
Bailout, bailout, bailout
They made it out of cash
But the energy companies
Get to keep their stash
Bailouts Smell (To the tune of Jingle Bells)
On one late August eve
Davis took us for a ride,
And soon Polanco’s bill
Was suddenly alive.
Bob and Davis warned
Other bills will take a dive
If this MOU’s
Not on our desks in five, Oh
Jingle bells, Bailouts smell
Davis laid an egg
Edison, should lose this deal
And make their parent pay.
Jingle bells, Bailouts smell
Davis laid an egg
Edison, should lose this deal
And make their parent pay.
Dashing through the halls,
The Energy lobby’s way
Room to room they go
Laughing all the way, ha ha ha
But ratepayers take charge,
Armbands shining bright
Oh what fun, it is to sink
The bailout bill tonight, Oh.
Jingle bells, Bailouts smell
Davis laid an egg
Edison, should lose this deal
And make their parent pay.
Jingle bells, Bailouts smell
Davis laid an egg
Edison, should lose this deal
And make their parent pay.
