Los Angeles Times

Exxon's and Chevron's big profits "come at the cost of an economy tipping into recession," said Judy Dugan, research director for the Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights in Santa Monica. "While Exxon makes the largest corporate profit by any corporation ever, families pay $60 and more for a gas station fill-up."

Contra Costa Times (Walnut Creek, California)

Chevron's profits provoked criticism from the Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights, a watchdog group. Judy Dugan, a research director for the Santa Monica-based foundation, said Chevron's profits are cold comfort for motorists who often pay more than $3 a gallon for gasoline in costly markets such as the Bay Area. "Consumers should be furious about these record profits," Dugan said. "They are still struggling to pay 50 bucks, 60 bucks for a fill-up. People in colder climates are paying practically double for their necessary heating oil."

Ventura County Star (California)

"Oil companies blame energy markets for high crude prices, but they profit immensely from these markets and oppose controlling them," said Judy Dugan with the Foundation for Taxpayer & Consumer Rights. "The government has to get some control over these unregulated electronic energy trading markets. Oil companies are spending billions of dollars buying back their own stock instead of investing in renewable energy or their own refineries, which, is the very definition of greed without regard for corporate responsibility," said Dugan.

Committee halts regulatory effort to fix hot fuel

The Kansas City Star

The suddenness of the decision surprised many of those attending who expected more public discussion by the committee. Some questioned if the decision had already been made. "It reminds me of a group of Chicago aldermen," said Judy Dugan, research director of OilWatchdog.org. "I feel pole-axed."
