Remembering Annette Ramirez’s Dedicated Service Dog Patch
Consumer Watchdog Campaign Board Member and Patient Safety Advocate Annette Ramirez is heartbroken to share the news of the passing of her cherished Canine Companions Service Dog, Patch Ramirez III, on January 25, 2026. Patch became an integral part of Annette’s family journey after tragic and life-altering medical negligence left her with long-term challenges.
Always by her side, Patch was not just a companion but a guiding light, offering unwavering support and comfort as she embarked on her path to reclaiming her independence. Patch, a loyal companion, was surrounded by his loving family in his final moments when he suddenly and unexpectedly passed away from cancer. Below is Annette’s obituary for Patch.

Patch, a charming male Labrador and Golden Retriever mix, was born on June 2, 2014, in Sacramento, California. He was the firstborn of a “P” litter – hence his name, Patch, a fitting tribute to his uniqueness. Patch came from Canine Companions, one of the most esteemed service dog organizations, considered the gold star of Service Dog organizations. His parents were both black Lab x Golden retrievers. Patch, the firstborn, was the lone white puppy. With his endearing personality and striking looks, Patch was truly one-of-a-kind!

In August 2016, I proudly graduated from Team Training with my remarkable companion, Patch, at the Canine Companions Southwest Region in Oceanside, California. Patch captivated everyone around him. He faithfully stayed by my side at Consumer Watchdog media relations events, press conferences and when lobbying legislators. Patch traveled with me to Sacramento to celebrate with Governor Newsom the historic signing of legislation raising the state’s 47 year old medical malpractice cap, AB 35.

Patch was loved by staff and volunteers at Consumer Watchdog and touched the lives of all he met. He always lit up the room wherever he went and truly brought the Dog to Consumer Watchdog.
I have been over overwhelmed by the outpouring of texts, emails and social media message regarding Patch’s passing. It’s brought me comfort to know how many lives he has touched. Patch was my “White Knight,” always by my side, wherever we went and whatever we were doing. I will miss him terribly.
In loving memory of Patch, I invite you to honor his spirit by making a donation to Canine Companions Southwest Region. Contributions can be sent to 124 Rancho Del Oro Drive, Oceanside, CA 92056, or made online at https://canine.org/location/southwest/.
Please mention your donation is in tribute to Service Dog Patch III and his devoted graduate, Annette Ramirez. Your generosity will continue Patch’s legacy of service and companionship.
