Insurers Fail To Rip-off Homeowners

Published on

The legislative session is over. I am happy to report that the bad guys didn’t win.

Insurance companies were not able to pass legislation in Sacramento allowing them to raise rates on homeowners in fire zones in violation of strict premium regulation created by voter-approved Prop 103. Thanks to your support, the State Senate refused to pass a dangerous insurance industry-backed bill by Assembly member Tom Daly.

In addition, a last-minute attempt by waste haulers to steal up to one hundred million dollars from consumers’ bottle deposit funds was also put down by leaders of the Senate.

There was a little bit of good news.  Legislation, AB 793, which specifies minimum recycled content went to the Governor’s desk. A new state Consumer Financial Protection Agency was created to help consumers.  Legislation allowing the state to manufacture its own generic drugs also is on the Governor’s desk.

Like most of this year, the legislative session was largely disappointing.  At least, thanks to your support, the bad guys didn’t do more damage while the public was preoccupied with COVID, police abuse and wildfires.

We appreciate all your support, which allows us to be as an effective watchdog as possible in these trying times.
