Arnold’s first legal victory
after a series of defeats was winning the ability to bust all
fundraising limits for his ballot measure committees. Probably not the
kind of fight voters thought they would be getting out of Arnold.
Campaign finance reformers have long fought the legal position that the
right to raise unlimited amounts of campaign cash is the same as
freedom of speech. The U.S. Supreme Court even agreed with them that
there’s no such absolute right to speak through money in a recent
ruling upholding the McCain-Feingold overhaul.
Today, however, Arnold exerted this so-called constitutional right to
speak through unlimited amounts of campaign cash and won a tentative
court ruling invalidating a state campaign finance rule.
So, if Arnold thinks that money talks, how can he continue to claim that he’s not listening to his donors?
