Consumer Watchdog is calling for an investigation into Pacific Gas & Electric and other utilities that shut off power to thousands of customers this week due to high winds.

The group said shutdowns shouldn’t be allowed unless firefighters determine there is a concrete wildfire threat in a specific location.

If utilities maintain their equipment and vegetation surrounding it, their liability in wildfires would be drastically reduced, the group said.
